Here's a helpful infographic by Chad Politt over at Relevance.com that helps explain the content promotion tools landscape today.

Politt has sketched out all the tools available to marketers in the earned, owned and shared media spaces. Although I'm a little suspicious of whether the chart is sponsored content from inPowered (it is after all, placed at the center of the entire ecosystem,) it's still informative when it comes to showing the use and scope of each platform.
